Sustainable printing and what we're doing about it

Commitment to doing good
For us, it’s not just a case of recycling paper and limiting waste, it’s about tweaking every step of our printing processes to minimise environmental impacts. It’s all well and good providing a massive range of biodegradable, seed paper marketing products to sing the song of sustainability, but what goes on behind the scenes has got to back up that commitment to doing good.
So stand back while we blow our ethically-sourced trumpets.
Keeping our environmental impact down
We’re powered by 100% renewable electricity, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and limit the effects of global warming. Thank you E.ON.
We use non-toxic water-based inks, which have low or no VOC or CFC (volatile organic compounds and chlorofluorocarbons, if you want to get technical). Meaning the use and cleanup have minimal environmental impact.

Low carbon footprint
We keep our carbon footprint low by sourcing and producing everything in the UK. We searched high and low to find manufacturers who could take our carefully selected, non-GMO seeds and turn them into high-quality paper. The search paid off.
We found one of the oldest paper mills in the world, fit for the job, and we’re not letting them go. We even have an exclusivity deal with them for future seeds. Watch this space.

From experience to innovation
We minimise waste left, right and centre. Our printing techniques shun typical lithographic and digital methods, which can damage, crush and overheat the seeds.
Instead, 80 years of printing experience has helped us develop our top secret method, to give SeedPrint seeds the tender loving care they deserve. Therefore, the end product has less waste and grows more pollinators.
Recycle. Recycle. Recycle.
Talking about recycling feels like a bit of a basic principle, amongst all the other brilliant stuff, but you can’t forget the fundamentals. In terms of making our products, we use pre- and post-consumer waste to form the basis of our seed paper.
In the factory, any waste card and paper we use that doesn’t contain seeds gets recycled back, and any seed paper offcuts are sent to children’s homes, hospices and schools. Meaning we have no paper waste, but continue to contribute to planting and growing new wildlife habitats.
We use minimal packaging, with recycled boxes and craft paper bands instead of elastic bands, so you can do your recycling thing at the end of the product’s journey.

Wildly sustainable printing
We offer bespoke shapes for your marketing products, and standard printing methods would have us creating and wasting custom cutters. Thanks to digital wizardry, we’re now able to sustainably create whatever shape you fancy, at lightning speed, with no tool waste. It also helps reduce costs, so you can thank us for your savings later.

Typical methods for binding, in the printing world, are glue and staples. Neither one floated our boat in the sustainability stakes, as glue is toxic and staples are landfill waste waiting to happen.
So we hit up our Leicester neighbours in the hosiery business to find a thread-sewn binding method for customer orders and the books of our sister company, Willsow. A trusty Singer sewing machine and strong, durable cotton solved this environmental dilemma, and we now do all of this in-house.
Just doing our bit,

to help you do yours.
Tom Willday, the founder of SeedPrint, and the fourth generation at the helm of his family printing business, is a sucker for a new bit of kit. And if said new bit of kit helps to build the brand’s sustainability credentials, he’s all over it. So, you can rely on us to make sure we’re ahead of the game in embracing new printing technologies, processes and innovations, to continually improve how good we are to the planet.
